My Mystic Me ~ 'It's Always This One'

Perturbing Self-Portraits
~ It's Always This One ~

It sometimes astonishes me how opaque my brilliance can be, even to those who come into contact with it on an almost daily basis.

I spent quite some time one evening composing a deeply touching and searingly insightful existential five-line exposé of the very essence of the human soul (which you can read here, I'm not disingenuously humble), linked, I might add, to the metaphor-laden image above, and the poor creature I live with wondered why I hadn't emptied the bins yet.

My valid and generous attempts to help her fathom her own psychological depths are generally met with a grin which rapidly becomes decidedly fixed (I can tell, feel, these things, almost like a sixth sense you might say, very little gets past my near otherworldly intuition, remember), and without fail, without fail mind, she'll respond, or more usually interrupt, with un utterence which proves beyond all reasonable doubt that she hasn't been following, such as, "That's very good, but can I have your dirty underwear because I'm doing a washing tonight and I've programmed it to start at midnight so it'll be ready to hang up before I go to work in the morning and I don't want to have to get up in the middle of the night just to put your smelly socks into the tub? Thank you."

Point missed completely. Completely. Such is my lot, but I assume it with admirable stoicity if I may say so. We are morally obliged to help those less fortunate than ourselves and I shall not be deterred nor shall I deviate from this calling. My conscience won't allow it.

My Mystic Me ~ 'Come In Pieces'

Perturbing Self-Portraits
~ Metro Rider ~

This was part of a 'photo shoot' which I imposed upon MissaParis who was interviewing me and whose blog you should check out because it's sweet and so is she.

A French girl who loves her city and writes about it in French and English. Right now she's talking about snow, because it's snowing in Paris and this doesn't happen that often but more often again these days what with global warming and all that. The last time I remember it snowing this much was back in '95 I think it was. Sound like a right Parisian old-timer, don't I?!

So I was in my favourite Paris tearoom in one of my favourite Paris passages and we had this idea, because I'd brought along a miniature version of one of my infinity squared pictures so we played with that a bit.

I like it a lot. It was actually MissaParis who took the shot, I mean held the camera, so thanks again for that :-D I did the scratches and stuff tho' coz I'm like that. Scratched.

My Mystic Me ~ 'Metro Rider'

Perturbing Self-Portraits
~ Metro Rider ~

Me and the Paris metro? Hey, sit down and I'll tell you all about it. Gotta rush? That's OK. There'll be another time coming round real soon. And another. And another.

Me and the Paris metro? Well it's like this. Sometimes I take it; and sometimes it takes me. Not good enough for you? Oh. Well, OK.

Me and the Paris metro? The day it stops running will be the death of me. Or should that be the other way round?

'Round and round, the years go round and round;
And many a dream is lost in the nasty city sound...'
~ Don McLean ~

My Mystic Me ~ 'Grilled and Pasted'

Perturbing Self-Portraits
~ Grilled and Pasted ~

Quite a scary one, this. Reminds me of Silence of the Lambs with whattsisname, Anthony Hopkins in that mask. It's funny, I wasn't even feeling that bad that day, but this picture looks like I'd happing rip your face off and have it nice and piping hot in a crêpe with melted cheese and egg, with plenty of salt and pepper just to spice it up a bit. Did you know that there's a cannibal tribe somewhere that call human meat 'long pig'? Well now you do.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting a bit peckish just typing all this rot. You don't fancy popping over, do you, and we can go to a nice quiet place for a bite or two, just you and me, all cosy-like? No? Well, all right, maybe another time. Be seeing you.

My Mystic Me ~ 'Peeling With Feeling'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Peeling With Feeling ~

Paris streets, you gotta love 'em. You don't know what you'll find. Ever. Not as long as there's weirdos like me around to look. Do you think this scene would have existed if I hadn't seen it? Of course not.

I've just created my little bit of Parisian reality right here in front of you? Whaddya think? Like it? Think it's cool? Crap? Or worst of all, somewhere in between? Well it really doesn't matter, if I'm wrong I'm right; Where I belong I'm right; Where I belong... (name that song).

I think I'm being slowly absorbed by the walls of this city until one day I'll just be a peeling and faded poster on some wall maybe next to a cracked and broken piece of street art by some long forgotten dreamer. Mind wanderer.

My Mystic Me ~ 'Foiled Again'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Foiled Again ~

It's nice to really mess around with some of those obscure effects buried deep in the menus of your favourite image rincer from time to time.

I must say I like the way the strange colours of my t-shirt are reflected on the body in the magazine I'm reading. Love little touches like that, which are totally unplanned of course.

You can, bizarrely, make out the words apple and raspberry on the t-shirt, which dont' seem to have much to do with anything - well, they don't, which is nice. I also like the way the glasses are far more prominent and clearer than my face, almost as though they had been added by an artist as an afterthought. It's true that the effect makes this picture, but I'm quite fond of it nevertheless. Let's face it, those electric colours do whack you in the face, don't they?

My Mystic Me ~ 'Monkeying Around'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Monkeying Around ~

Weird, wasted sort of photo, in Barcelona again and still. Liked the way the Gaudi arches were all thrown off kilter. Think my brain went off kilter too this day. It happens sometimes.

Got a massive backlog of self-portraits - if only I could just throw one out every week this wouldn't happen. But there are always so many great shots of Paris I have to get out there, poor old me gets a bit neglected oftentimes. So maybe I'll do another one right now! And maybe not. Scream if you wanna go faster...

My Mystic Me ~ 'Fingering The World'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Fingering The World ~

Pretty self-explanatory really. I mean, what you see is what you get, some guy grabbing his face, and you can choose to interpret it in any way you like.

I think I'd seen this as a pretty cool shot with some famous person in some magazine and wanted to have a go, and it's true it makes for a dramatic image if it isn't just downright silly.

The treatment's very hard, which makes it punchy, perhaps too hard, but this is the one I went with, along with a touch of almost cyan which makes a nice change from oversaturated tootie-fruitie stuff I would say.

My Mystic Me ~ 'Stairway To Heaven'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Stairway To Heaven ~

This isn't a negative image, but it almost could be. I like the idea of the inverting of space - the idea that what you see is not there, only what is around it making it seem as though it is. There are some optical illusions like that.

I'm barely here in this picture. If you took away all the leaves surrounding me above, there would be very little sign that I ever passed by that way, just a glaring white void.

Maybe that's what it's like at the end, you leave a void and are remembered only by the things and people who surrounded you during your short spell here on earth. I'll let you know in due course...

My Mystic Me ~ 'Oh My Gaudi!'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Oh My Gaudi! ~

Another from Barcelona, in the Gaudi park, Parque Güell, a double exposure where the pic you see here is as big as it goes, so don't bother clicking!

It's pretty cool, because a blue section of the amazing ceiling has been superimposed more or less where my left eye is supposed to be, which is pleasing.

It took a few attempts, trying to get both exposure of the two shots right as well as the positioning working not to mention trying to hit the shutter button with it facing away from me. Nice zit shot on the neck there too, by the way. Say hi to St.Sab (with his halo on the wrong way...)

My Mystic Me ~ 'Hey, Pinhead!'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Hey, Pinhead! ~

Think this was taken in Barcelona but you can't really tell. Funnily enough, my hair was feeling particularly short and spikey that day, and this shot just accentuates that, what's left of it anyway (the hair, not the shot).

I vaguely remember my daughter messing around with her or my camera and laughing her head off at the results, and I think this was one of them. I rather like the weird angle as it makes me seem to be thrusting forward at an almost gravity-defying angle and gives me a phenomenal sense of purpose, doncha think?

Of course I killed her after when I realised what she'd done to my hair. It must have been that strange gel she'd rubbed into it when we were playing around earlier. I'll get her back tho', you can be sure of that. There's this little app on my iPhone called FaceGoo or something, and this little number produces wonders... I'll let you see one of me shortly...

My Mystic Me ~ 'Thinking Of You'

Scary Self-Portraits
~ Thinking Of You ~

He he. I wasn't really thinking of you of course. Sorry. Can't remember what I was thinking about. Probably trying not to blink and hoping that I'd be somewhere in the photo frame unlike the majority of my attempts.

I like the colours here. There are so few of them you can almost count them, let's see... there's red, yellow, cyan and blue, and what else?

Ah, and black of course (is that a colour, or an absense of colour? answers on a postcard..) Then there's a pinky-purple and what looks like two shades of green, which leaves... well, white I guess.

Is that eight? My three-bit life laid out for us to contemplate in all its glory. Marginally better than a two-bit life, I suppose...

Self Portrait ~ 'All Lined Up'

My Mystic Me
~ All Lined Up ~

My goodness, what a lot of lines on my face... can that really be me?

Lines seem to permeate our lives in one way or another, don't they?

Railway tracks, queues for the toilet, rows of passengers, electricity cables, lines of prose, and reading between them.

Better go, there's another five suspect self-portraits lined up right behind this one.

Sizing You Up

My Mystic Me
~ Sizing You Up ~

This is a trail posting. I've just started including larger, 640 pixel versions of my shots on my new Paris Photo Walks blog, and I'm thinking, well, why don't I do that on all the others too?

I mean, the idea of anyone actually stealing one of my pics is almost laughable, except for a few of the Paris ones I suppose, and even at 640 pixels on the largest side it would still print pretty horribly and yet the difference on a blog, as people's screens get bigger and bigger, is quite impressing.

So here we go, with a charming little shot of my doggy nose. Enjoy.

Self Portrait ~ 'Head Space'

My Mystic Me
~ Head Space ~

This is another version of the pic below I thought it would be fun to publish as they are so different... and yet the same!

I always suspected I was a nut case, but now we have confirmation. But you kind of knew that, didn't you?

Self Portrait ~ 'Head Room'

My Mystic Me

I'm not telling you how this pic came about - it's too weird to actually give it away!

The next pic up will be a variation on this one, so maybe that'll help you work it out... but maybe not!

Anyway, I like that fact that my newly sheared almost bald head (yep, I've still got a bit of hair left) looks like the sun rising over this strangely pasted-on Parisian building... or is it? Could almost inspire a poem I reckon. Slap Head's Last Sunrise, I might call it. But I probably won't.
